People and place, place and people and light and sea…

The commission was to substitute the old church of El Puerto, a modest building that had welcomed the parishioners of this area of the city for 30 years, and which the people of the neighborhood understood as their parish. Understanding the link between parishioners and the sea and to translate it into the project has been a starting point for the project, to create an understanding between people and the architecture.

Rooting architecture in the places it belongs, this is an approach we defend. The identity of the place giving shape to the architecture.

The sea of the sailors that we have known personally and who year after year take the Virgin and Saint Anne in procession, the light from Almeria, white, everything generates a palpable whole in our work, to create links and complicities with the new building.

The program is simple: a meeting and celebration space for at least 400 people, classrooms for catechesis, meeting rooms for the parish and a home for the pastor. The plan is laid out from a continuous wall that folds on itself to form the central nave. It houses the sacristy and rectory, and becomes the bell tower. The chapels are grouped within a stone volume, an intimate area, wrapped by the outer wall. The nave, fractured by a crack, is flooded with light. It is this axis that “pulls” the altar to the streets in a gesture of calling. When the door is opened, the altar is seen from the square, powered by the light axis.

The Morris A. Mechanic Theatre is a playhouse at 1 North Charles Street that is part of the Charles Center of Baltimore, Maryland. The theatre was built by and named for owner Morris A. Mechanic who operated a number of theatres in the city.

The Mechanic Theater consists of a square podium that houses retail space and an underground parking garage as part of the Charles Center. The fan-shaped auditorium that seats 1,614 sits on top of the podium and has a street-level entrance on Hopkins Plaza as well as a pedestrian bridge that connects to an elevated walkway leading to other buildings in Charles Center. Balconies are behind the orchestra seats and protrude beyond the exterior walls to give the building the appearance of a ratchet gear when viewed from above.

The exterior of the building is rough concrete that bears the markings from the wooden forms used to create the walls. The street entrance on Hopkins Plaza leads to a stairway that takes patrons to the lobby on the second floor. The exterior lobby wall is glass while interior walls have a faux wood finish or are covered with burnt-orange vinyl. The plaza-level entrance is framed by towers holding stairs and elevators to access the balcony. The stage house is clearly defined as a separate element attached to the auditorium.

In November 2009, the British newspaper Daily Mail reported that Virtual Tourist.com named the Mechanic Theatre as number one in its list of the Top Ten ugliest buildings.

The site – a relatively steep hill – offers a stunning view over Graz. This panorama also provided the main guiding principle for the design. One additional goal was to provide direct access to the garden. Due to the very steep slope, this goal actually worked contrary to the aim of maximizing the panoramic view.

The upper level, which is oriented completely towards the fantastic view, contains all of the living space, while the lower level houses the doctor’s office and adjoining rooms. This layout provides a clear separation of living and working spaces, including separate entrances.

The upper level features two spacious terraces – one facing south and west, which provides an extension of the living room and the children’s rooms, and one facing north and east, which is an extension of the bedroom and bathroom and affords somewhat more privacy. A very broad external staircase with sitting steps connects the upper level and the garden, thereby joining the living space and the garden into an organic whole.

A pool is located in front of the building and connects to the carport. The pool and carport together provide a clear border between the property and the street, thereby increasing the privacy of the property.

Thus, a harmonious ensemble is created – a play of extrovert and introvert, of proximity and distance, which maximizes the strengths of the property, while simultaneously offering privacy.

On a 1400 m2 lot in the heart of the north area of the city of Quito, the commission required a building for medium-density housing. The L-shaped lot has a steep slope, as the ground is depressed an entire floor between the top and the bottom. The slope is evident along the entire front of the lot. There are two important trees on the sidewalk worth keeping.

The design arises from two main ideas: First, to divide the building into two blocks laid out in an L-shape, following the morphology of the ground in planimetric and topographic terms. This indicates that the block on the upper area of the lot will be laid out an entire floor over the annexed block, thus establishing a hierarchy between interior and exterior spaces, and giving more exclusivity to the densification of the buildings. Second, to create a stepped square that serves to connect the two housing blocks, but at the same time give the project a semi-public space which visually connects the square and the street, complemented by outdoor furniture, landscaping and the existent vegetation of the street.

OCT Museum in Shenzhen

Led by chinese architect zhu pei, designboom received a tour through the construction site for the 'OCT design museum' by beijing-based practice studio pei zhu while in shenzhen, china. Positioned within a cultural, recreation and entertainment development along the gulf, the spheroidal exterior evokes the imagery of a water droplet captured in time. its unique shape attracts visitors through 
the encompassing public plaza. The shell inclines outward from a constrained footprint to form an integrated overhang while a cantilever extends to encourage circulation below, guiding visitors around the building towards the entrance.
The lustrous metal cladding of the curved facade mirrors surrounding activity while triangulated windows and skylights mimic the scattered illuminated reflections found on the water's surface. The array of penetrations similarly introduce dappled streams of daylight within the internal atrium.

The Cube

   The simplest and in the same time the hardest thing to draw and represent. It may represent the perfection: 12 edges perfectly equal, 6 sides perfectly equal and 8 corners situated, of course, at equal distances from one another.

   Some great ideas start from a cube. I personally do that almost always, in my drawings. There is an infinite number of possibilities to create with a cube.

RIBA - Royal Institute of British Architects

    The link to their site is www.architecture.com.

   My opinion is that the link, only the word "architecture", says all about the quality and the professionalism from that institute.
   One thing that totally caught my eye was the British Architectural Library presented on this site.
"Entry to the British Architectural Library is free and everyone is welcome.
